What are Startups? A Simple Guide to Big Ideas and Bold Dreams

Krisha Vardarajan2024-06-17

You may have heard this term get thrown around a lot. So what’s the fuss about? Well, a startup is a company that is just getting started off. It's a young business that is just taking off, often built around a fresh, sometimes revolutionary idea.

Most startups today are tech products. Not because tech is the talk of the town but because most traditional business ideas such as basic trading are already saturated markets and with tech the boundaries are endless. These ventures are usually aiming to disrupt the market and scale quickly.  Whether it’s a new app that simplifies how we shop or a tech product that’s a total game-changer,

startups are where bold ideas come to life.

And yes, while they’re risky and a lot of them don’t make it, the ones that do can transform our lives forever! Every big company you think of today was probably at the risk of failing but it is usually visionaries and committed founders and their teams that keep it afloat.

So, why would someone start a company with such big risks? Well, there are a couple of factors but the most prominent ones are; people want to add value to this world, someone wants to do what they love and make money simultaneously or someone just doesn’t want to answer to a boss.

Starting a company is difficult and requires a huge investment. Most if not all startups are funded by investors who bear risk. They own a small percentage of your company (sometimes profits as well) as their reward.

Startups are also beneficial to economies, they generate employment, keep the big companies on their toes by putting up a tough fight, transform lives with innovative solutions, and so much more.

Perhaps, you (yes, you), could be the next founder of a startup. You could have the chance to change the world while living on your own terms. But are you unsure of how to get started?
